As a business owner, you put in time, energy and money to grow something amazing.
But, regardless of how much you love what you do, there will always be times when you are feeling really stressed and in need of something to help calm you down.
One of my favorite tools to combat this is using essential oils. I am not talking about the cheap ones you buy at Whole Foods or on Amazon, I am talking about certified pure therapeutic grade essential oils. You may be wondering what the difference is and why you should care.
The difference is huge!
Why certified pure therapeutic grade essential oils?
I used the store bought ones for years and while they smelled nice, I did not notice much benefit. I also wondered why the bottle said not for internal use and not for use on skin. Once I started using high quality oils my life shifted in a big way! I am here to explain a little bit about the amazing power of these tiny little bottles.
Here’s a very brief background of what they are, where they come from and why they are so powerful.
Imagine a flowering tree- its leaves, petals, roots, bark, seeds, all of its goodness. Now imagine we take it all, steam distill it to pull all the goodness out of the tree and out comes a super concentrated little liquid known as essential oils. These are 50 to 70 times more concentrated than dried herbs, therefore, you only need a drop or two to get the full benefits. More is not better!
Ancient civilizations have used these oils for centuries in many capacities from religious and marriage ceremonies, cosmetics, and medicine long before modern medicine was invented.
How essential oils work
Imagine yourself sitting in your office, feeling super anxious and stressed trying to meet your deadline feeling like you might lose it. Instead you turn on your diffuser with Forgive or Cheer essential oil blend, take a few deep breaths and start to feel more calm and less stressed. You are probably wondering how that is possible. Keep reading!
I am going to give you a simple explanation of how essential oils impact your emotions without geeking out on the science too much. Trust me, stay with me, it’s so worth it!
Whether you’re a nurse like me or just someone that wants to know how this works, I am going to tell you, in a nutshell.
When you smell something, you have smell receptors that carry the smell to your olfactory bulb which processes and stores smells before sending them to the limbic system in your brain which is divided into different structures.
The hippocampus the section that is responsible for long-term memory, the amygdala which controls emotions, the hypothalamus which regulates the nervous system and hormones and the cingulate gyrus, no not like the greek sandwich, but rather this part of your brain regulates your blood pressure, heart rate and attention.
So, essentially when your brain smells something pleasant, because it is all connected, the smell can in turn cause your body to feel more calm, less stressed and better able to focus. Pretty amazing, right?
Try to recall a time when you smelled something and instantly you felt happy and you found yourself smiling just thinking about that memory.
The opposite is true if you smell something you don’t like your brain will automatically link the smell to a bad memory or a person and the memories come flooding back- think of the jerk that broke your heart in high school that wore Drakkar Noir ladies!
How Essential Oils Help Business Owners
Dr. Rena Szabo, Psy.D, the Psychology Director at Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center Clinic in Gilbert, AZ conducted a study in her office (not sure if she formally published it, but I heard her speak about it a few weeks ago at a conference I attended) to see the impact that diffusing the emotional aromatherapy blends of essential oils might have on the staff at her clinic.
They were all given a survey asking various questions about how they were feeling in regards to burn out:
- 72% surveyed said they were experiencing symptoms of burnout.
- 69% reported feeling stressed at work BEFORE diffusing essential oils at work, this number jumped down to
- 36% AFTER diffusing oils in the office.
She has a TON more statistics that I will spare you from, but diffusing the oils in her clinic significantly reduced negative moods and feelings.
Essential oils are hugely beneficial to reduce feelings of stress, anxiety and overwhelm. For a business owner this is huge! When stress levels are lower and you have more clarity, your productivity levels will rise. Rather than worrying and feeling overwhelmed, you are able to get laser focused on what action steps need to be taken and move forward. Increased productivity means more success in your business.
How to use essential oils
AROMATIC: SMELLING THE OILS IN THE AIR.
This is why having a diffuser in your home or in your office is a must! They not only may help relieve stress, but they also cleanse the air which will come in handy during the winter months when everyone is getting sick.
TOPICAL: PLACING THE OILS ON YOUR BODY OR SKIN.
The best way to do this is to mix a few drops of the oil with a carrier oil, such as fractionated coconut oil. This will not only help the oil to go exactly where you want it to, but also helps for those with sensitive skin. I always recommend testing the oil first on a small patch of skin. Try placing a drop of oil in your hands, rubbing your hands together then cupping your nose and taking a few deep breaths. You may start to notice you feel more calm if using Lavender which has a more calming, sedative effect. Peppermint oil, on the other hand can be uplifting and helpful when you are starting to crash midday. Certainly better than a grande coffee at 3pm!
INTERNAL*: YOU CAN INGEST THE OILS IN WATER OR IN A CAPSULE.
Sometimes when I am having trouble sleeping at night I will place 1-2 drops of Serenity oil, the restful blend, in a capsule to use as a gentle sleep aid.

The craziness of life will always ebb and flow, and stress will always show it’s annoying little head. However, if integrating essential oils into your life at home or in the office can dramatically reduce those feelings, and may help reduce the urge to drink a glass of wine or pop a pill to calm you down, then my thought is go for it!
Oils come from the earth and you will certainly not have a hangover the next day!
